NEVER ever hike in shorts, especially when:
- The weather’s hot and sticky;
- It’s rainy season, and;
- You’re going to pass through swampy areas with no wind (aka breeding grounds).
Because you’ll become bug lunch.
And I’m not talking about ordinary mosquitoes, which can be shaken off. The ones that bit me are persistent. They only give up when you flatten them with a mighty smack.
That was how I got 30-plus hard bumps on my legs, each of them red like the posterior of a monkey in heat. They are also extremely sensitive; even a breeze can set off an intense itch (and the irresistable urge to rub them).
